In Summer 2025, Advent Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, NC applied for and received a grant from our Hunger & Thirst Fund to sponsor a meal-packing event for children in need. The congregation had taken part in similar events several times before and found each one worthwhile and meaningful, and was eager to host one of their own.

On March 14, 2026, Advent gathered more than 80 volunteers to pack over 15,000 meals, which will be distributed through schools in developing countries where communities are unable to raise or sustain enough food on their own. The grant covered half the cost of the event, including food, materials, and shipping, while Advent provided the tables and the volunteers and, together as a congregation, raised the other half through fundraising.
However, the impact reaches beyond the meals themselves. Volunteers from other churches in the community joined the effort, turning a service project into an opportunity to make new friends and build new relationships. Guided by a friendly and organized representative from Rise Against Hunger, the group quickly finished packing in about two hours.
Finding Joy in Serving Together
The day was full of fellowship and fun. Volunteers worked, laughed, sang, and danced, and before the meals were sent off, they paused to praise God and bless them. For members of Advent who are unable to travel for mission work, the event offered a way to take part in serving others from home.
After a successful event, Advent plans to keep seeking out those in need, both locally and abroad. The event has also sparked interest in organizing efforts to meet needs within the Winston-Salem community.
At the end of the event, the volunteers left with full hearts, knowing that children halfway around the world would soon be fed.
