Clarence Hinkle (1880-1960)

Clarence Hinkle was born in Auburn, California. As a young man, he moved to San Franscisco where he enrolled at the Mark Hopkins Institute and studied under Arthur Matthews. Later he was to study under William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League in New York City before spending a year in Paris where he was greatly influenced by the work of the Pointillists and Impressionists. In 1917, Hinkle moved to Los Angeles where he taught at the Chouinard School of Art. Later, he resided in Laguna Beach before retiring to Santa Barbara where he resided until his death.
